Who Were Slaves?Slaves are nonpaid workers that are usually cruelly treated. All of the slaves in the US were Africans/ African Americans, both male, female, and children.

Legal StatusSlavery was legal in the United States until 1865, it is still illegal today. After the Civil War, Congress passed an amendment declaring that slavery was illegal. The fourteenth amendment banned the use of slaves in the United States.

Slavery Expansion
Over 70 years, slavery expanded West and South. Also, the slave population grew to almost 4 million enslaved Africans. By the 1820s, the United States started to divide. This created two sides of the country, the North and the South, or also known as the Union and the Confederacy. By 1860, every Southern state had slaves, while most of the Union were free states and territories.
